3 Prayers For This Election

Two weeks from today our nation will elect a new president. Many long-range consequences will result from the leadership of our new president. I have three simple thoughts going into the election as it relates to the church.

1. I Pray That Understanding Would Come To The Church In America

Like our nation, the Church in America is divided over many things. The denomination of churches that I belong (the Southern Baptist Convention) is divided in many ways. In fact, this election cycle itself has done much to divide leadership, pastors, and those in the pew. My prayer is simple...after this election God would bring some understanding as to what we (Christians) are up against and how we must learn to stand together.

2. I Pray That Our Eyes Would Be Opened To The Maddening Deception That Engulfs Believers In Our Nation

I must admit, that is a very arrogant sounding point. Please let my clarify the meaning behind this prayer. First of all, I realize that all of us are probably deceived in one way or another; nobody has it all figured out. Next, not everybody will fall into the category I am about to point out. The deception I am referring to is something very specific. Third, this is my opinion and may not even resonate with you.

I personally believe many Christians in our nation, knowingly or unknowingly, see our nation and the Church as intertwined. There is absolutely nothing wrong with loving the Lord and loving your country. Please don't misunderstand. In fact, I believe you should respect & thank our military every chance you get, stand for the pledge, and fly an American flag at your home (I do all three).

My problem is I have the impression that many believe God's will for His Church in our nation and God's will for the nation go hand in hand. I do not believe this. I know (because of what the Bible says) what God's will for His Church is in any nation. I do not know God's will for America. God's plan for America might be different than your plan, my plan, Trump's plan, or Hillary's plan. Rest assured that God has a plan for America and it will be executed. My prayer is that Christians all over this nation would recognize that God has not and will not forsake His church, and we should not live as if He has once this election is over!

3. I Pray That The Hope Of Our Calling Would Emerge In Our Hearts & Churches

I certainly cannot say it better than the Bible can. Listen to the words of the Apostle Paul under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:18-19 says "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might."

a. Do you know what is the hope of His calling as it relates to your life?
b. Do you know what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance as it relates to your life?
c. Do you know what the surpassing greatness of His power toward you truly looks like?

I pray that after this election many will begin to understand these things better.
